Apprentice painter Trent Hall is a total klutz when it comes to boys. In fact, he’s pretty bad at social interactions generally. So when a fit, super-confident, blue-eyed tradie called Macca turns up on the building site, the 19-year-old Aussie responds the only way he knows how — by making things way more awkward than they need to be. Misunderstandings, miscommunications and misfires abound on this hot, horny, and often clumsy adventure. But then, the course of true love never did run smooth. Not for Trent, anyway.
Review –
Trent, 19, is (as the blurb states) an apprentice painter for his uncle. He’s also in the closet. While working at a house with his uncle, he sees Aiden (called Macca) for the first time. Keeping his sexuality a secret from those around him? Well, a certain part of his anatomy almost gives him away more than once. One glimpse of the other man and it stands up and takes notice… often. Poor Trent gets to the point where he actually almost jacks off right then and there while looking at the man outside the window, the others be damned. Trent is so obsessed with Macca that he can’t take his eyes off of him. What if the other guy is a homophobic bastard and catches him gawking? Will young Trent end up getting his ass kicked by a straight contractor? Maybe Aiden is doing his own gawking. 😉
This is a great little story. From misunderstandings to a few funny moments, it takes a bit for poor Trent to finally find relief for his aching hard-on… the hard-on that is ever-present when Aiden is around. It’s really funny when he’s trying to explain said constant hard-on to his uncle. I adored both Trent and Aiden, though I admit to being embarrassed for Trent a few times. It takes a little while to get to the sex, but the build up? Perfect. When it happens, it’s hot as hell.
Another thing I really loved about this book is that it’s so Aussie. If you follow this blog, you know that Kazza K (the “Down Under” part of On Top Down Under) is Australian and I’m in the U.S. I thought I had learned a lot of Aussie slang in the two years I’ve known Kazza, but I learned a bit more by reading this book. The author even adds a glossary of terms in the beginning.
Highly recommended if you are looking for a sexy and erotic romance.
This book was provided by the author in exchange for a fair and honest review.
Macca, there’s an Aussie name for you. Everything has to be shortened here or everyone given a nickname. This sounds like a good little story with some humour too. Extra love for the sexy use of a tradie pic and a quote 🙂
I can thrown some more slang at you if you like 😀
It was a great read. I kept thinking of you the entire time I was reading it. “Hey, I’ve heard Kazza say that before and yay! I know what it means…” LOL The glossary in the beginning of the book was also a big help.
Thanks about the quote and pic. I had fun ‘researching’ for that one. 🙂
WOW Cindi, you’re right, that’s the most realistic least, bastardised M/M novel language wise I’ve ever come across. Oh great review too 🙂
It’s nice to read a novel set in your home town. I really like it but I’ve really OD’ed on romance over the last few months but I still slipped this in and enjoyed it. It’s a nice story of young love.
Thanks, Paul. I really loved this and if you haven’t read Spotting Jake (the book after this one), you really should. It was every bit as good as Downing Tools. Note that my review for Spotting Jake is EXTREMELY NSFW. 🙂
